In January, the Kenyan government announced the discovery of coltan deposits in six counties across the country. This highly valuable mineral is used to manufacture high-tech devices like electric car batteries and mobile phones. The discovery of coltan could place Kenya on the map as a coltan exporter, a sector currently dominated by DR Congo. It is also expected to create jobs in an underdeveloped part of the country.
